Toni Collette’s latest show Wanderlust explores Joy Richards (Collette) and Alan Richards (Steven Mackintosh), a married couple who decide to embark on an open relationship and explore their sensuality and sex outside their union.
The Netflix series originally went to air on BBC One, and while its unsurprising that the episodes follow tales of lust and love, what is amazing is that Toni Collette’s character, Joy, was the first ever female character to have an orgasm on the channel.
On the slightly bizarre historical TV moment, Collette told Radio Times that she was “happy to take the accolade”.
Collette went on to talk about why Wanderlust is such an important show, especially for women, “A middle-aged woman’s sense of self-esteem, of sexuality, is not often talked about.”
And now a moment of silence for all the sexual repressed female characters on BBC One.
