While some of the beauty looks to come out of Fashion Week are strictly reserved for the runway – bleached brows and glitter hair, we’re looking at you – others shine all the brighter in real life.
Take the hair at J.W. Anderson’s recent London Fashion Week show, which had us scrounging around in our handbags for a hair tie before half the models had walked.
Secured at the nape of the neck and slicked into a deep side part, the low ponytails worn by all models with long hair were gorgeously glossy and – prepare yourselves – all worn on the side.
But forget bad ‘80s flashbacks – the J.W. Anderson iteration of the side ponytail feels fresh and sophisticated. The secret? Rather than sticking out from the side of the head, ‘80s-style, the new side pony is tied just behind the ear, allowing hair to cascade over one shoulder.
The polished look can be given a punk edge with a gleaming gold ear cuff, or used to draw attention to a pair of statement drop earrings.
Of all the hairstyles to hit the runway this season, the ponytail is enjoying the biggest revival, from the romantic, ribbon-tied versions seen at Tory Burch and Marchesa to Burberry’s loose, air-dried iteration.
The eagle-eyed would have noticed the first return of the side pony at Chanel Spring/Summer ’17, when Sam McKnight gave models sporty, slightly mussed up ponytails secured on the side with – of course – Chanel logo hair ties.
