Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, most of the world has tuned in to binge-watch—and obsess over—Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.
And while the intriguing story of a young orphan’s foray into the male-dominated world of chess has inspired many, the show’s choice in the 1960s-inspired fashion and beauty has viewers looking to replicate the series’ stunning looks.
Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, the story follows Beth Harmon, played by Anya Taylor Joy, a chess prodigy struggling with drug addiction, who is attempting to prove herself against men in the world of chess.
And while chess and fashion typically don’t go hand-in-hand, the chess genius and her ode to ‘60s fashion is an odd-yet-chic pairing.
Created by French costume designer Gabriele Binder, Beth’s style choices were inspired by Audrey Hepburn, Edie Sedgwick, Jean Seberg, Pierre Cardin, which explains a lot. According to Binder, at least one dozen of her outfits contained geometric patterning that mirrored the structure of a chess board—discreetly, of course.
From her downtime moments to her nail-biting chess tournaments, perhaps it’s time to inject some of Beth’s ‘60s flare into your style rotation.
Below, we’ve rounded up her best looks and how you can emulate it in 2020.

Both effortless and elegant, Beth’s lingerie set is one of her easiest looks to achieve. Wearing a simple pale blue, lace bodysuit, she pairs the piece with a fluffy pastel pink cardigan to keep her look cosy and chic.
