If you were ever under the impression that you didn’t have anything in common with the royal family, well, I have some news for you. Queen Elizabeth may have just become the most relatable royal, with news emerging that 93-year-old does her own makeup every day.
The only exception to her daily ritual? The recording of her famous Christmas speech, where she lets the experts do the work.

You may be asking, how did we come across such information? Or maybe you’re curious to know exactly which beauty products her Majesty uses in her regular rotation? The Queen’s right-hand woman and long-term dressmaker, Angela Kelly, has recently released her new tell-all book – The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, The Dresser and the Wardrobe, and it’s a gold-mine for everything you never knew you wanted to know about Queen Elizabeth.
For example, did you know that Kelly sometimes cleans the royal’s priceless jewels with gin? Same.
On the topic of the annual Christmas speech, Kelly told People: “You might be surprised to know that this is the only occasion when Her Majesty does not do her own make-up.”
Kelly shared that on that specific day, she books professional TV make-up artist, Marilyn Widdess, to come to the Palace to attend to the Queen’s beauty and makeup needs and get her ready for her camera close-up.
While we’re yet to find out exactly which beauty products Widdess has in her makeup kit, it’s sure to include products from Elizabeth Arden and Clarins – household beauty brands that also happen to have Royal Warrants – and which, many of us also have in our beauty bags.
The theme of DIY seems to run in the royal family, with Kate Middleton famously doing her own makeup for her wedding to Prince William in 2011 and Meghan Markle also being known to do her own makeup on many occasions.
Maybe we’re closer to being royals than we think.
