In 1947, fashion changed forever when an emerging Parisian designer, Christian Dior presented his first collection for his eponymous label.
Now, the triumphant tale of Dior’s rise to become one of this century’s most coveted luxury maisons is being told in a new television series on Apple TV+ called The New Look.
While post-war Paris saw Coco Chanel as the couturière du jour, rising stars Dior, Cristobal Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent pioneered a revolution in womenswear that ultimately shaped the fabric of the industry.
Against the backdrop of the Nazi occupation of Paris, The New Look follows the career of these great designers and, as per the logline, focuses on “the pivotal moment in the 20th century when Paris led the world back to life through its fashion icons.”
With the name inspired by Dior’s pivotal collection, fondly coined ‘The New Look’ because of the contemporary ultra-feminine and consequently ‘new’ designs, we’re excited to see this crucial moment in history on the small screen.
Our very own Ben Mendelsohn, who you’ll recognise from his Emmy-Award-winning performance in Netflix’s Bloodline, stars as Dior, with the iconic French actress Juliette Binoche taking on the mantle of Coco Chanel.
Todd A. Kessler, who has previously worked with Mendelsohn on Bloodline, has written, directed and executive produced the series.
With the show filmed exclusively in Paris, we know that the nostalgic project will serve all the wanderlust and French fashion inspiration we will ever need—our apologies in advance to Emily In Paris.
The show makes its debut today with the first three episodes, followed by one episode every Wednesday through April 3. You can stream The New Look exclusively on Apple TV+.
