An inside source has revealed the reason that pop superstar Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, have broken up after six years together.
Speaking to People, the source said that “differences in their personalities” was mainly to blame for the relationship coming to an end, adding that they “weren’t the right fit for one another.”
The source also explained how their relationship had evolved since the pair met back in 2016.
News of the split was first reported by Entertainment Tonight, with the outlet claiming that the couple, known for writing songs together, had ended their relationship a few weeks ago.
The source told the outlet that the split was “amicable” and “not dramatic”.
People then confirmed the news via a source “close to the pair”, while a source close to Taylor told CNN: “Taylor and Joe broke up a few weeks ago. They simply grew apart and plan to remain friends.”
The famously private couple are yet to comment on their split. The news comes at a difficult time given that Swift has just kicked off her Eras Tour in the United States, starting on the 18 March.
Swift, 33, just finished playing in Arlington, Texas, and is next due to perform in Tampa, Florida on the April 15. Fans hope the star may address the news at her next show.
So far Alwyn has not been seen at the Eras Tour, but Swift’s friends Emma Stone and Selena Gomez have both been spotted in the friends and family section.
Swift and Alwyn started dating back in 2016, and he’s been by her side ever since. Alwyn, who is an actor but also musically talented, has co-written songs alongside his girlfriend under the pseudonym William Bowery. Their music includes most recent Midnights album song ‘Sweet Nothing’, which covers the beauty of their quiet romance.
“They said the end is coming/Everyone’s up to something/I find myself running home to your sweet nothings,” the lyrics read.
Naturally, news of the split has shocked fans as the couple have appeared to go from strength to strength over their six years together. In fact, there are rumours that the two were engaged or married. Neither has commented on whether there is any truth in that.
Alwyn told the WSJ Magazine, “I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say.”
Swift’s Midnights song ‘Lavender Haze’ is about their romance, with the term ‘lavender haze’ being an old 50s-era phrase for the honeymoon part of a relationship.
“I guess, theoretically, when you’re in the lavender haze you’ll do anything to stay there and not let people bring you down off of that cloud,” Swift said when promoting the music video clip for the song.
“I think a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just ‘public figures,’ because we live in the era of social media, and if the world finds out that you’re in love with somebody they’re going to weigh in on it,” she said.
“Like my relationship for six years, we’ve had to dodge weird rumours, tabloid stuff and we just ignore it. This song is sort of about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff.”
Most of what we know of Swift and Alwyn’s relationship is in the songs she’s written with the likes of Gorgeous, London Boy, Call It What You Want and Invisible String all about her British beau.
There’s no doubt that fans everywhere are sending their love to Swift, while we wait for the star to officially comment the split.
