Stella McCartney On Designing Meghan Markle’s Wedding Dress

"I think Meghan chose me for reasons other than just a beautiful dress”

Meghan Markle‘s wedding dress was one of the most highly-anticipated parts of her May 19th nuptials to Prince Harry with speculation starting well before the now Duchess had likely picked her designer.

Despite wearing a Givenchy by Clare Waight Keller gown for the church ceremony, Meghan’s silk, halterneck Stella McCartney reception dress got just as much – if not more – attention.

Now the British designer has revealed she thinks more went into Meghan’s choice than just picking a beautiful gown. “I think Meghan chose me for reasons other than just a beautiful dress,” McCartney told ELLE UK.

“Plenty of people can do that. She is not a difficult client to make look beautiful. Amal called me and asked me to do it, as did Oprah. I look at that Amal dress, and it is made of sustainable viscose that took us three years to develop. And I think, obviously I am a British designer, but I think being a woman and being a women’s woman played a part. They are all women’s women. It’s a big deal,” she explained.

“[Meghan] approached me and we worked on other things,” she continued, referring to the black coat Meghan wore in Wales in January and the gown she wore to the Royal Albert Hall in April.

“She wore other pieces of mine and we had a friendship. And then she asked me to do her second wedding dress. I was honoured and I still am.”
