With meteorologist predicting the return of the El Niño summer, earlier than usual we might add, spring has well and truly sprung.

The sudden warm weather may feel a delightful reprieve from winter’s icy grip, but the pace at which it’s come about has left us in somewhat of a sartorial shock.

What did we wear before jeans and trench coats became our mainstay? How do we style shorts in an office-appropriate way? And, most importantly, what key trends are worth investing in this spring?

You can find the answer to your shorts question here, but as for spring trends, we called on David Jones’ General Manager of Womenswear, Footwear and Accessories, Bridget Veals for her seasonal trend predictions.

Spring Fashion Trends 2023

Quiet Luxury

“Customers are embracing the quiet luxury trend, investing in quality pieces rich in simplicity. Think simple tailoring, tactile textures, and a muted colour palette,” Veals tells marie claire Australia.

“This trend embraces new brand Tove and Posse which sit alongside our already loved Australian brands Camilla And Marc, Willow and Scanlan Theodore.”

On A Mission

“Local and international designers such as Anine Bing, The Frankie Shop and Ganni have taken a timeless approach on the utilitarian trend, showcasing military tones in cargo-inspired suiting, strong shoulder silhouettes and crisp shirting.

“Contrasting fabrications will play a key role in executing this trend as we transition into the warmer months with touches of soft leather and light weighted outerwear leading the charge.”

Toe to Toe

“We’re already seeing customers gravitate towards our footwear department as they invest in wardrobe essentials for the warmer weather.

“Carrying on from last year’s Y2K trend, we have seen the rebirth of ballet flats which are equal parts chic and comfortable. With the spring party season upon us, we expect customers to opt for a statement heel this season.

“Brands such as Aquazzura and Stuart Weitzman have focused on delicate bows, buckles and embellishments that will add a sense of playfulness to any look.”
