Seeking to get body, mind and spirit into alignment, beauty director Sally Hunwick trials a new energetic treatment with surprising results.
What is a spinal energetic treatment?
Created by chiropractor and counsellor Dr Sarah Jane, Spinal Energetics is a new therapy designed to interact with a person’s spine, nervous system and energetic field. Able to help heal physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances from within, an hour-long session blends chiropractic medicine with Eastern techniques such as reiki, inner dance and shamanism. The therapy also incorporates Buddhism, Hinduism, Chinese medicine and yogic and meditative traditions to help bring about balance.
What happens during treatment?
I first sit and talk to Jane (@drsarahjanechiro) about what’s bothering me: a chronic pain in the left side of my neck, which is keeping me awake at night. According to Jane, certain areas of pain can mean specific things. “We want to open someone’s story and take the meanings of these areas of pain,” she says. “The left side represents your emotional storage, while the right side represents your physical. We all have different layers: there are physical issues, then there are the emotional, mental and spiritual layers.”
Next, I get on the treatment bed face up. Jane prods into my belly and organs, stopping where she finds issues. It feels like a tightness or a stitch, which hurts when dug into. Jane chalks this up to repressed emotion, which I should probably get rid of at some point. The organs that represent the “planning system” in my body were also stuck thanks to too much cortisol daily. As a working mother of two small boys, I wasn’t surprised. On the upside, my reproductive organs were firing (nice to know even though I’m all done in the birthing stakes).
Still on my back, Jane tells me she is going to pull my left arm using her energetic work. One firm yank and I feel an electric-like shock that courses up my arm. It’s a feeling that is wildly surprising yet oddly pleasant. It definitely feels like a release. My left side is far more explosive than my right (that emotional energy again) but afterwards I feel lighter and freer in my movements. Jane has me turn onto my stomach, probes at my neck and shoulders and once again confirms that I am stressed up the wazoo. Tight and out of sorts from too much time at the computer and modern-day worries, she says.
We then move onto some deep breathing that Jane says can help unlock the body, while she does her special blend of energetic work around me. The sensation is almost out-of-body. Long fluid breaths can help us “tap into an innate intelligence”, adds Jane. And I have to confess, as I breathe under her guidance, I do feel oxygen getting into pent up nooks and crannies in my body and ironing out the tension. “Allowing a fluid movement of breath opens you up so you can start moving and directing energy,” she explains. “It helps release that tension.” The aim is to get back to a sympathetic state where body, mind and spirit are in alignment.
The Results
I walk out feeling lighter and happier. Six weeks later the pain in my neck has still not reappeared. Even better news is that one session should last me a couple of months at least. “We’re trying to change the constitution of the consciousness and engineer the system so you don’t have to come to us,” says Jane as she walks (and I float) out of the studio. “Because we’re not treating just the ailment, we’re trying to get to the root cause by waking the innate intelligence.” If this is how to get some balance back into my life – and keep it there – I am all in.
