We Have A First Look At Sofia Vergara As Columbia’s Notorious Female Druglord

She'll be playing the infamous 'Black Widow'.

We’ve missed her dearly since the conclusion of Modern Family last year, and now, Sofia Vergara is set to grace our screens once more in a captivating new series.

Making a dramatic return, Vergara will star as Griselda Blanco, a Colombian drug lord widely known as the ‘Black Widow.’ The series will be housed on Netflix, as a six-episode limited series and is titled, Griselda.

Vergara will executive produce the show alongside Eric Newman, who brought us award-winning shows including Narcos and Narcos: Mexico (although it’s worth noting that the team have been very clear that Griselda is not a spinoff from the popular drug drama).

Speaking to Varietyabout the project, Vergara said:

“Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about. We are thrilled to have found the perfect partners in Eric, Andrés and Netflix to help us bring this story of her life to the screen.”

The extended release from Netflix reads:

Griselda chronicles the real-life of savvy and ambitious Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. A devoted mother, Blanco’s lethal blend of charm and unsuspecting savagery helped her expertly navigate between family and business leading her to become widely known as the Black Widow.”

While this has long been a passion project for Vergara, it won’t be the first time that the life of Griselda Blanco will be translated to the big screen. Her story has previously been told by the 2017 film Cocaine Godmother, where she was portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones. According to the Hollywood ReporterJennifer Lopez is also working on a project featuring Griselda Blanco called The Godmother, in partnership with STX Films.
