Another day, another ‘90s trend ripe for a resurgence. Hot on the heels of bum bags, anklets and even (in the case of Bella Hadid at least) skinny eyebrows, the scrunchie has made its way to 2017.
But in the same way you’d rock up to your high school reunion with a fresh blow-dry and a week’s juice cleanse behind you, the new scrunchie has had a revamp. One that comes courtesy of cult New York label Mansur Gavriel – the brand behind those bucket bags dominating your Instagram feed.
Presenting their first ever ready-to-wear fashion collection in Soho, the brand stayed true to its It-accessories roots, presenting lust-worthy new bags and – you guessed it – scrunchies galore.
“When I heard scrunchie, I was like, ‘Ahhhhhh!’ It’s my nightmare,” the show’s hair sylist, Bumble & Bumble global artistic director Laurent Philippon, told The Cut. “But actually… it’s done in a very cool way.”
“It’s worn very low and broken so you just keep the hair over the ears and behind the shoulders,” he says. “You tuck part of it behind the ear so it’s a little messy.”
The Mansur Gavriel scrunchies are made from vintage Italian fabrics and sadly, are available exclusively from their New York City store. But we’re sure you can find several in the back of a drawer at home.
