Some things age well: red wine, blue cheese and Jennifer Lopez. Sex And The City? Not so much.

Sarah Jessica Parker (aka Carrie Bradshaw) has admitted that the hit series Sex and the City looks “tone-deaf” 20 years after it premiered.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Parker said a 2018 reboot of the show wouldn’t work, “You couldn’t make Sex and the City today because of the lack of diversity on screen.”

Imagining a reboot with four white leads, Parker said, “I personally think it would feel bizarre.” But she wasn’t keen on the idea of a new cast either; “I don’t know that you could do it with a different cast. I think that’s radical and interesting, but you can’t pretend it’s the same.”

The #WorkCharlotte meme (created by Chelsea Fairless and Lauren Garroni of @everyoutfitonsatc Instagram account) has highlighted the show’s more problematic moments; including racism, birasure and trans phobia.

In one meme, Samantha says, “I am paying a fortune to live in a neighbourhood that’s trendy by day and tranny by night.” Before being corrected by Woke Charlotte, “The correct term is ‘trans’ and trans sex workers deserve respect. After all, they’re not the ones who are gentrifying the neighbourhood. Please check your cisgender privilege, Samantha.”

Parker’s comments come after she confirmed there wouldn’t be a third SATC film last year – so there’s little hope for a Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte reunion.
