Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first Netflix series has finally been announced, and of course, it’s about a topic that’s very close to their hearts.
Partnering with Archewell Productions, the Invictus Games—an Olympic-style sports competition that hosts disabled and injured atheletes and veterans of the military—will work with their production company to produce a documentary series titled Heart of Invictus.
According to a press release on April 6, the series will be directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and produced by Joanna Natasegara, the Oscar-winning team behind The White Helmets, Virunga, and Evelyn.
Heart Of Invictus will follow coaches, athletes and their families while they work toward the 2022 games at The Hague in the Netherlands, which was supposed to take place in 2020 but was postponed because of the pandemic.
As a former working royal, Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William were strong supporters of the Invictus Games, especially since Harry himself is a veteran of the British Army.
In a statement, Prince Harry revealed, “Since the very first Invictus Games back in 2014, we knew that each competitor would contribute in their own exceptional way to a mosaic of resilience, determination, and resolve,”
He continued, “This series will give communities around the world a window into the moving and uplifting stories of these competitors on their path to the Netherlands next year,”
“As Archewell Productions’ first series with Netflix, in partnership with the Invictus Games Foundation, I couldn’t be more excited for the journey ahead or prouder of the Invictus community for continuously inspiring global healing, human potential and continued service.”
The Duke of Sussex will serve as an executive producer on the series and will even appear on camera. As for whether Meghan will make an appearance on-screen is still unknown.
Heart of Invictus is the first project to come out of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s partnership with Netflix, which is one of multiple avenues the couple have been pursuing to gain financial independence from the royal family since their exit. Since their departure, Prince Harry has also secured his first job as “chief impact officer” at BetterUp, a mental health coaching company.
As for when the series will premiere, there is currently no release date, but perhaps royal fans can give The Crown a rewatch in the meantime.
