Nicole Kidman is one of Australia’s biggest Hollywood success stories and is on a roll, having recently executive produced and starred in hit Netflix series The Perfect Couple. Not to mention her starring role in films and series including A Family Affair, Babygirl, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Nine Perfect Strangers and HBO’s Big Little Lies. In fact, the combined grossing of her films over her 41-year career stands at over $USD 5.9 billion ($AUD 8.87 billion). But Nicole Kidman’s children are one of her biggest sources of love and joy.

“There’s an enormous amount of luck in my life, but there’s also the most important thing: love, big, big love,” she said in her 2024 AFI Life Achievement Award speech, which was one of the first time her daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, attended a red carpet event with Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban.

More recently, Nicole, Keith and their two daughters were spotted enjoying the Women’s Street Final Skateboarding event on day two of the Olympic Games in Paris.

It looks like Nicole then brought her 16-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose, to the glamorous Omega event the following night.

How many children does Nicole Kidman have?

Nicole Kidman has four children: Isabella Jane and Connor Anthony whom she adopted with Tom Cruise when they were married, and Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret with husband Keith Urban. She has a very close relationship with Sunday and Faith, but keeps details of her relationships with elder children Bella and Connor private.

So, here’s what you need to know about Nicole Kidman’s children – both her biological children and her adopted kids.

The Complicated Family History Of Cruises

Kidman is most famous for her extensive filmography and award-winning performances, but the public has certainly had a fascination with her personal life. And a lot of it started with her first marriage to Hollywood star Tom Cruise.

After meeting on the set of their 1989 film Days of Thunder, Cruise and Kidman had a whirlwind romance, culminating in a wedding just over a year later. Kidman said that she immediately started wanting to have kids and was soon pregnant.

Devastating Loss Of Her First Child

However, she suffered an ectopic pregnancy and lost her first child. This painful and traumatic experience drove Kidman and Cruise to adopt two children: daughter, Isabella Jane (born 22 December 1992), and son, Connor Anthony (17 January 1995).

Cruise is famously a devout member of the Church of Scientology, and both Bella and Connor were adopted through the church, as they were born to parents who couldn’t take care of them.

In 2001, Kidman had miscarried yet again. Cruise filed for divorce that same year, citing irreconcilable differences. The children stayed with their father and the church, reportedly resulting in a strained relationship with their adoptive mother.

When Kidman’s father died, her adopted daughter wasn’t physically present to provide support. And Kidman, in turn, did not attend Bella’s wedding to IT consultant Max Parker in 2015 – although it seems like her father and brother weren’t guests at the intimate ceremony, either.

Fans were also quick to notice that in Kidman’s 2018 Golden Globes acceptance speech, she only thanked her biological daughters with her second husband, Keith Urban. In fact, in all of her previous speeches, Kidman never acknowledged her adopted children.

Why doesn’t Nicole Kidman see her adopted children?

People have speculated about why Kidman and her adopted children don’t see each other much, and Kidman’s personal issues with the Church of Scientology seems to be the number one theory.

According to fellow actress and former Scientologist, Leah Remini, Kidman was considered an “SP” – Suppressive Person, a term given to non-believers and defectors – by both church leaders and her very own children.

Despite Remini’s claims, the church, Kidman, and Bella and Connor themselves have denied that religion has come between them. Kidman told Who Australia that “they are adults. They are able to make their own decisions”, and she keeps her kids’ lives private out of respect for them and their beliefs.

In 2014, Connor Cruise (who is now a DJ and musician based in Florida) also spoke up about the rumours. He told Women’s Day, “I love my mum. I don’t care what people say, I know that me and mum are solid. I love her a lot”.

Even though they haven’t been in pictures together since 2006, Kidman keeps in touch and only has positive things to say about her adopted kids in interviews. “They are generous, kind, and hardworking,” said Kidman, referring to Bella and Connor.

But there have been clues that things may not be completely peachy between the 31-year-old fashion designer Bella and her 57-year-old mom. While Kidman has always been tolerant of her first family’s beliefs, she probably did not celebrate in her oldest daughter becoming the new ambassador for the controversial church.

The Love of My Life: Keith Urban And Nicole Kidman

After a few high-profile yet unsuccessful flings in the early noughties, Nicole Kidman met country rock star Keith Urban at the G’Day USA gala in 2005. A year later, in June 2006, Kidman and Urban married.

Knowing Kidman’s past struggles with infertility and difficult pregnancies, it was a pleasant surprise when the couple announced the birth of their first child (and Kidman’s first biological daughter) Sunday Rose, who was born on 7 July 2008. Named after the day of the week, Kidman explained that Sundays were really lonely as a divorcee. But her relationship with Urban changed all of that.

“We went from dreading Sunday to really loving it. It was the day when nobody was going to bother you, you could stay in bed, you could do what you wanted to do. We just thought, What a great name for our baby,” Kidman said.

While attempting to get pregnant with their second child, Kidman found herself having trouble once again. But thanks to a surrogate, Kidman and Urban were blessed with another daughter on 28 December 2010.

Just like big sister Sunday Rose, Kidman’s second daughter followed in the same tradition of meaningful kids’ names. Faith Margaret was, according to a close source, named so because Kidman and Urban “never gave up faith that they would have another child together”.

Nicole Kidman has revealed that her two youngest daughters are being brought up in an unconventional way – without Instagram or even phones. The family also goes to church together, even though Urban’s personal beliefs are different from Kidman’s Catholic upbringing.

Both Sunday and Faith seem to be following in their parents’ footsteps. Faith is a musician like her father, while the Sunday has expressed interest in acting , just like her Hollywood star mom, and more recently in fashion.

While Nicole Kidman and her kids may not have the ideal family situation, there’s obviously no shortage of what matters most – love, support, and respect for each other.

With four beautiful children, Kidman knows how lucky she is.

I would love to have had more”, the actress said. “But I’m happy to have the family I have”.

The 16-year-old opened the show wearing a white dress with a delicate lace trim and gathered waist detail. Finishing off the petticoat-style outfit was a pair of black peep-toe pumps with a white trim worn over navy leg warmers.

In an interview backstage with Vogue, the newly minted model shared her excitement about being cast in the show. “I’ve been wanting to do this for so long, so when the offer came through, it was really exciting and now the day’s finally here,” she said before adding a word of advice for any other newcomers: “Probably just like, don’t stress yourself out too much, because I was really stressed, and then, it’s just like, everyone here is really nice.”
