Congratulations are in order to Sofia Richie Grainge and her husband Elliot Grainge, with the couple expecting their first child together.
Sofia, 25, spoke to Vogue about the new addition to their family, saying that Elliot, 30, was so supportive while they were waiting to find out if the test was positive.
Grainge had been at Milan Fashion Week, feeling quite under the weather but chalking it up to travel and jet lag. However, upon her return and not getting any better, she took a pregnancy test.
She said the pair had been trying since their wedding in April 2023, and she’d gotten used to the negative symbol, so when a faint line showed up, she knew it could be the start of something big.
“He [Elliot] didn’t really flinch when I said I was checking. I was taking one of those really crappy at-home tests, and there was the faintest of lines,” she explained, adding that she sent her husband out to get a more accurate test. They spent the whole journey chatting excitedly on the phone.
“He’s such a sweet guy he always wants to protect my emotions and expectations, so he kind of sat me down and said, ‘If these are negative, don’t be upset. Our moment will come’,” she said.
However, upon checking, all three tests she’d taken were positive.
The couple have kept their pregnancy out of the public eye until now, with Sofia saying that she wanted to make sure all was well before going public.
“Pregnancy is really scary and you want to protect that space,” she said. “I didn’t realise there are so many milestones you have to hit and so many tests you have to take. For me, it was really important to protect our mental health and our space as a couple.”
The couple decided to find out the gender, hosting a small gender reveal with coloured poppers. They opened them together, finding out that they are expecting a little girl.
“We both really thought it was a boy, so it was a true shock. My dream in life is to have a daughter [though], and Elliot is really excited for a girl too. I think it’s so typical for boys to want boys, but he has a lot of sisters. It was really sweet. He’s very sensitive,” she said.
While Richie Grainge has stayed largely away from the camera lens during her pregnancy journey so far, now that it’s out in the open, she’s excited to embrace maternity styling.
“Now that we’re announcing it, I have so many ideas,” she told Vogue. “I’m not really tapping into maternity wear at all, if anything, I’m just sizing up.
“I’m also not buying an entirely new wardrobe for this pregnancy. I’ve bought a few pairs of pants in bigger sizes, but I’m wearing my same jackets, and sweaters, and trenches – I’m about to have some fun with it now that I can spread my wings and fly.”
She’s also been busy, doing up her daughter’s nursery and collecting cute outfits to wear, which she says are “cute and girly”.
Another priority has been putting some thought into her fashion legacy, keeping certain pieces aside for her daughter to wear. “I’ve held onto things, and thought, ‘Oh my daughter will have this one day,’” she added. “I have a lot of little bags to pass down. I have a lot in mind.”
