Royal affairs are always explosive news; the Charles, Camilla and Diana scandal perhaps the most infamous in recent memory. And today, shocking reports see Queen Letizia of Spain’s ex-brother-in-law, Jaime Del Burgo, allege he had a years-long affair with the royal, both before and during her marriage to King Felipe VI, in a tell-all book.
The unpublished book about Queen Letizia, which the NY Post reports will be called ‘Letizia & I’, is said to be penned by journalist Jamie Peñafiel.
For those unfamiliar with the Spanish royal family, Del Burgo, is an entrepreneur and son of a Spanish politician. He was married to Queen Letizia’s younger sister, Telma, between 2012 and 2014. Telma has since remarried, to an Irish lawyer, Gavin Bonnar.
The Post reports the book alleges Del Burgo and Queen Letizia were romantically involved prior to, and even after, her marriage to King Felipe, who she wed in 2004.
It reportedly goes so far as to say Del Burgo had planned to propose to her when she announced she had started seeing a “diplomat” referring to Felipe, in 2002. Del Burgo’s alleged plan to propose was before he became involved with the Queen’s sister.
Prior to her marriage to Filipe, Queen Letizia was married to a literature teacher, Alonso Guerrero Perez from 1998 to 1999.
A spokesperson for the Spanish Royal Family told the Daily Mail: “We have no comment to make about this.”
At this stage, the only alleged ‘proof’ of the claims is a simple selfie, reportedly taken by Queen Letizia and sent to Del Burgo. The image is not dated.
Del Burgo went on to marry Queen Letizia’s sister eight years after Letizia married the King, and he claims he was not with the Queen while he was married to Telma. The book reportedly states that the alleged affair was ended in 2011 by Queen Letizia.
Telma’s new partner Gavin Bonnar is used to famous circles, having previously been married to Sharon Corr of Irish girl group The Corrs, with whom he shares two children.
Queen Letizia and King Felipe are still married and are due to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary next year.
