Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully, according to detailed records from her private secretary Sir Edward Young.
The Daily Mail shared the news from an alleged document lodged in the Royal Archives, which was not made public until now.
“Very peaceful,” Young wrote. “In her sleep. Slipped away. Old age. She wouldn’t have been aware of anything. No pain.”
The late queen was 96 when she passed, at her beloved home Balmoral Castle in Scotland, on September 8, 2022.
The Queen had always been open about her love for the highland home, with royal expert Kate Nicholl telling Page Six that it was her wish to pass there.
Further details about the Queen’s death are expected to be revealed in royal biographer Robert Hardman’s anticipated book Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story.
News.com.au reports that the book will detail who visited the Queen prior to her passing, with King Charles III having spent an hour in the Queen’s company alongside his wife Camilla before heading out onto the moors to forage for mushrooms.
He was reportedly on his way back to Balmoral in a car when he was informed of his mother’s death.
The same report suggests that Princess Anne and the Queen’s dresser Angela Kelly were with her at the time, alongside a minister Rev Kenneth MacKenzie who read her the Bible.
Reportedly the Queen left letters for her loved ones, inside her locked red box of paperwork, one to her son and the other to her private secretary Sir Edward Young. It also had her final act as monarch, the candidates for the Order of Merit, proving her dedication to the role of Queen even to her final breath.
According to the Daily Mail, Charles rang both Prince William and Prince Harry when the Queen started to become quite unwell, asking them to travel to Scotland at their earliest convenience to say goodbye.
When the Queen passed earlier than expected, Charles rang William to let him know. He also allegedly rang Harry repeatedly but could not get through as he was already in a plane on the way to the United Kingdom.
