Mere months after sharing the news of her year-long battle with breast cancer, the Newsroom actress revealed the birth of her and comedian husband John Mulaney’s second child, in a candid Instagram post on September 22.
The couple welcomed baby girl Méi (pronounced May) – meaning ‘plum’ in Chinese, via gestational surrogate.
“Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon,” Munn wrote. Adding, “I had so many profound emotions about not being able to carry my daughter. When I first met our gestational surrogate we spoke mother to mother. She showed me so much grace and understanding, I knew I had found a real-life angel. Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true”
Baby Méi joins the family as the younger sister to the couple’s oldest child, two year old Malcom Hiệp Mulaney, born in 2021.
Earlier this year, Olivia revealed to People that she had been secretly battling an aggressive form of bilateral breast cancer. Her harrowing diagnoses included four surgeries, a double mastectomy, and being placed in a medically-induced menopause.
The actress then followed up with a “timeline” of her breast cancer journey and current remission status on September 4, 2024, in the hope that her own struggle would encourage others to seek help and be better informed about the realities of cancer.
“Jan 2022 2 mammograms, 2 ultrasounds: clear, Jan 2023 mammogram: clear, Feb 2023 genetic testing: 0% chance of genetic cancer, March 2023 Tyrer-Cuzik breast cancer assessment score: 37.3%,” the timeline read, after adding that a follow-up biopsy in April 2023 resulted her bilateral breast cancer diagnosis.
Opening up her comment section to anyone who might have questions about her treatments, surgeries, or medications, Olivia thanked her followers for their ongoing support. “Also, I just wanted to say to everyone who has sent me a message or stopped me on the street when I’m out shopping, it really means so much to me and it’s been incredibly healing, so thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Following her diagnosis, the actress underwent egg retrieval surgery in the hopes of being able to expand her and John’s family in the future, as shared in an interview with Vogue. She had previously spoken out about freezing her eggs in her thirties.
The new dad of two also shared the family update to his own Instagram, joking that “We stole so much stuff from the hospital,” before adding, “I love my little girl so much.”
