We know of Novak Djokovic as a star tennis player and grand slam winner but we didn’t expect to add ‘tree-hugger’ to his list of monikers.

However, he has confirmed a strange rumour going around that he has maintained a ’15-year’ special relationship with a Melbourne tree.

The Serbian star says the tree is located in Melbourne’s Botanical Gardens, although he did not divulge which tree in particular that it is.

When asked about the tree he said, “It is true. There is one particular tree that I have been having a special relationship with. So let’s say…in the last 15 years.

He added that he loves the Botanical Gardens, and that it is such a treat to have such a wonderful nature reserve in the middle of the city.

“That particular tree, I cannot reveal which one, I’ll try to keep it discreet for myself when I’m there to have my own time,” he said.

“I like to ground myself and connect with that old friend.”

When asked why that tree in particular called to him, Djokovic couldn’t explain in any major detail. It seems to be an inexplicable love affair.

“I liked its roots and the trunks and branches and everything. So I started climbing it years ago. That’s it. I just have a connection,” he said.

While the practice may feel a little odd, it seems to have worked well for Djokovic. He has won a record of 10 Australian Open titles throughout his career, which is unprecedented in the world of tennis.

However, it does make sense given than Djokovic does best on hard courts, which are those played on at the Australian Open.
