Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, has confirmed in an Instagram post that she is in remission from cancer.
“It is a relief to now be in remission, and I remain focussed on recovery,” she wrote, “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you everyone for your continued support.”
In January last year, Kensington Palace confirmed Kate Middleton would be stepping back from royal duties to undergo unspecified abdominal surgery. Rumours around her health swirled and public scrutiny became intense.
In March, Princess Catherine shared that she had been receiving treatment for cancer via a video message, explaining that she and Prince William had delayed addressing the diagnosis publically to give their children, George, Charlotte and Louis, time to process the news. In September, she revealed her chemotherapy had ended. At the time, she said she was focused on remaining “cancer-free”, but this is the first confirmation that Middleton is officially in remission.
In her post, she sent her heartfelt thanks to The Royal Marsden Hospital and those who had supported her throughout the year. “I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year.
My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything.”
She also announced her new role as Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden. She wrote: “…my hope is, that by supporting groundbreaking research and clinical excellence, as well as promoting patient and family wellbeing, we might save many more lives, and transform the experiences of those impacted by cancer.”
