When news broke of an accuser naming Jay Z in a previously filed claim against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs last week, the mogul was quick to issue a swift denial.
As the media began covering both the accuser and the accused in great detail, the claimant (legally referred to as Jane Doe) was thrust into the spotlight like never before.
The claims initially submitted by Jane Doe’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs outlined harrowing details involving the alleged drugging and rape of a then-13-year-old girl following the 2000 VMAs.
At the time of submission, the allegations listed an unnamed “male and female celebrity”, who were present and allegedly took part in the assault.
While there was much speculation around who the couple could be, until the claim was refiled to name Jay Z earlier this month, the public was kept in the dark.
Now, the accuser who filed the case against Jay Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has broken her silence in an interview with NBC, sharing an honest, and candid account of the “catastrophic event”
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs & Jay Z Accuser Admits To Inconsistencies
It’s worth remembering that at the time of the alleged assault, Jane Doe was 13-years-old and claimed to have been under the influence of what she believed to be a spiked drink.
Expecting a crystal clear recount of each and every detail following a traumatic event is difficult enough, but adding in age, time elapsed and the presence of memory inhibiting drugs adds another layer onto an already impossible situation.
Nevertheless, Jane Doe acknowledged that she had “made some mistakes” in her recollections of that night, but maintained those inconsistencies didn’t impact the truth behind the allegations.
In the original filing, Jane Doe stated that her father had picked her up after the alleged assault, however her father has been unable to confirm that series of events. When asked by NBC if he could confirm his daughter’s account, he responded: “I feel like I would remember that, and I don’t.”
“I have a lot going on, but I mean, that’s something that would definitely stick in my mind.”
When the woman’s attorney was questioned about the disparity, Tony Buzbee responded “We agree he states he doesn’t remember. … His daughter explains that he was in no state to remember during that point in time due to personal issues he was having then. We are talking about a time frame more than twenty years ago.”
In addition, the submission also included the claim that Jane Doe spoke with Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden following the assault. However, since then, a representative for the Madden brothers has confirmed that neither attended the 2000 VMAs and were on tour in the Midwest at the time of the alleged event.
“Honestly, what is the clearest is what happened to me and [the] route that I took to what happened to me. Not all of the faces there are as clear,” the woman said in NBC’s follow-up interview.
“So I have made some mistakes. I may have made a mistake in identifying.”
Why Jane Doe Decided To Go Public
The now-38-year-old accuser spoke candidly about her decision to name Jay Z in the claim, stating that she hoped her story would embolden others who may have experienced something similar to come forward.
“You should always fight for what happened to you,” she told NBC. “You should always advocate for yourself and be a voice for yourself. You should never let what somebody else did ruin or run your life. I just hope I can give others the strength to come forward like I came forward.”
She also revealed the reason for not telling anyone about the assault until now, stating: “Even if somebody found out, who was gonna believe me? I mean, it was to the word of two celebrities against mine.”
The claimant also suffered from mental health issues as a result of the alleged assault, revealing that she “got severely depressed. I withdrew completely. My grades started slipping,” and she eventually dropped out of school.
In spite of the difficulties she faced, the mother of two eventually regrouped.
After serving less than a year in the Army National Guard, she left with the rank of private and went on to complete her high school diploma and Christian counselling certification, “so that I can help people who have gone through what I’ve gone through.”
Jay Z Responds
A statement released by Jay Z in response to the NBC interview, read: “This incident didn’t happen… and yet [Tony Buzbee] filed it in court and doubled down in the press. True Justice is coming. We fight FROM victory, not FOR victory. This was over before it began. This 1-800 lawyer doesn’t realize it yet, but, soon.”
The statement was accompanied by another from attorney Alex Spiro, who shared his intent to seek an immediate dismissal of the claims made against his client.
“It is stunning that a lawyer would not only file such a serious complaint without proper vetting, but would make things worse by further peddling this false story in the press. We are asking the Court to dismiss this frivolous case today, and will take up the matter of additional discipline for Mr. Buzbee and all the lawyers that filed the complaint.”
Representatives for Combs, who is currently awaiting trial in jail after pleading not guilty to charges of racketeering, conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution, have called the lawsuit a “shameful money grab.”
