In 2015, Irish widower and father of two, Jason Corbett was brutally killed in his home at the hands of his new wife, Molly Martens and her father, Thomas. Now, one year after their release from prison, questions about Jason’s death are once again in the spotlight as the investigation becomes the focus for a new documentary: A Deadly American Marriage.

Reexamining the evidence of the case, the documentary explores the conflicting stories of both sides in the case that one investigator dubs “one of the bloodiest crime scenes I’ve seen in a long time.”

But first let’s unpack what happened to Jason Corbett.

Two years after losing his first wife to complications following an asthma attack, Jason Crobett looked to hire help in the form of an au pair to take care of his two children, Jack and Sarah. It was then that he met Molly Martens. While working for Corbett, the couple fell in love and soon married before moving from Ireland to North Carolina for the businessman’s work.

Their relationship appeared as though something out of a romcom, but in August 2015, it took a dark and deadly turn when Corbett was killed by Molly and her FBI agent father, Thomas.

According to the police recordings, Thomas and Molly claimed it was self-defense after he choked his wife, her father claimed “he said ‘I’m going to kill her.’”

Both Molly and Thomas were sentenced over Jason’s death, the former pleading no contest and the latter guilty to involuntary manslaughter. But, as the show unpacks hidden tapes, the trial and the evidence, audiences are left asking if it was self-defense or planned?
