The parents were shocked to learn their baby was still alive on their way to his funeral

A hospital in India has launched an inquiry into horrifying events which saw a newborn baby mistakenly declared dead by a doctor.

On Thursday, the mother had given birth to twins at the privately run Max Hospital in Dehli. As BBC reports, one of the twinsโ€”a baby girlโ€” was stillborn while the boy was also pronounced dead after spending two hours in a critical condition.

But on their way to the funeral, the boyโ€™s parents noticed movement inside the polythene bag carrying his body.

โ€œWhen we opened the bag, we found the boy breathing. I was shocked. I couldnโ€™t believe my eyes,โ€ twinโ€™s grandfather, Praveen Malik, told CNN.

The little boy is now receiving treatment at a nursing home in New Delhi, the grandfather explained.

โ€œWe donโ€™t want to keep our baby at Max hospital. We donโ€™t trust the doctors there,โ€ he said. โ€œThey betrayed us.โ€

It is not known if the boy will survive.

In a statement, Max Hospital said the child had been โ€œhanded over without any sign of lifeโ€ to the parents.

โ€œWe are shaken and concerned at this rare incident. We have initiated a detailed inquiry, pending which, the concerned doctor has been asked to proceed on leave immediately. We are in constant touch with the parents and are providing all the support needed,โ€ the statement said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwa confirmed on Twitter that an investigation is underway while Delhi police are also looking into the incident.
