Despite people often focusing on Selena Gomez’s love life – she’s had high-profile relationships with The Weeknd and, of course, Justin Bieber – the 27-year-old singer has been dealing with far more important issues over the past few years after being diagnosed with lupus. Her condition is so serious that in 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant, something which impacted her weight and made her address her body image for the first time.

In a new interview with Giving Back Generation, Selena revealed that taking medication for lupus had a direct impact on her weight. “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure so I deal with a lot of health issues and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff,” she said, before going on to explain that though the condition doesn’t directly affect her weight, “it’s the combination of all of it. It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life—it depends on even the month, to be honest. So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that.”

She continued: “In reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life. Right [it’s totally out of my control], and that got to me big time. I think for me, that really messed me up for a bit.”

During the interview with her best friend, Raquelle Stevens, Selena also discussed how social media can impact mental health, saying she used to see other women on Instagram and compare herself until she took a step back to focus on the real world. “I see so many beautiful girls and amazing different characters and then they’re just demolished by an image that they’re trying to chase,” she said of social media.

“They’re wanting to be a completely different person but that’s not what’s inside of them, you know? But I get it. I look at other people’s pages—or I used to—and I’m like, okay, I need to fix myself.”
