What Caused The Pacific Palisades Fire?
There are currently three major wildfires ravaging Los Angeles, including the Pacific Palisades and another in the mountains above Pasadena. The fires began amid the Santa Ana winds, which are hot dry gusts that originate inland and blow to the east. The winds are occasionally called the Devil Winds by superstitious locals for their unpredictability. Local authorities have described the winds associated with the fires as “hurricane-force”. With conditions of this kind, particularly in a drought-stricken and mountainous area like Los Angeles, a spark can quickly become an out-of-control blaze.
What Is The Pacific Palisades?
The Pacific Palisades is an elite suburb of Los Angeles nestled in the hills behind Santa Monica. Famous for its large houses and celebrity tenants, the Pacific Palisades is a residential area. While not a tourist destination, the area is home to the Getty Villa, a local art museum.
It has some pop culture credentials, including being the local area of the Modern Family characters, who attended the local high school, as did Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday.
Celebrities Affected By The Los Angeles Fires, Comment
Not all celebrities have been affected by the flames. Here are those who have spoken about the tragic wildfires and their homes.
Jamie Lee Curtis
The Freaky Friday actress shared a post on Instagram, saying “My community and possibly my home is on fire.”
“My family is safe. Many of my friends will lose their homes. Many other communities as well. There are so many conflicting reports. With all the technology there seems to be very little information. PLEASE POST FACTS! IT WILL HELP THOSE WONDERING! It is a terrifying situation and I’m grateful to the firefighters and all of the good Samaritans who are helping people get out of the way of the blaze,” she wrote.
“Neighbours have taken care of neighbours. We ALL take everything for granted because we are all living our lives but when it hits your community, it’s particularly shocking. Life on life’s terms. If ever there was need for the use of the phrase MY HAND IN YOURS, it is right now. Take care of each other. Stay out of the way and let the firefighters do their work. Pray if you believe in it and even if you don’t, pray for those who do.”
Curtis has since confirmed her home is safe.
Maria Shriver
Journalist and ex wife of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver, has shared footage of drive through her Pacific Palisades neighbourhood on Instagram. While not speaking directly to the safety of her residence, she wrote, “Heartbreaking, devastating, beyond belief. Everything is gone. Our neighborhood, our restaurants. All our friends have lost everything. We have evacuated, but are safe. But people have lost everything.”
Kate Beckinsale
“Hearing the winds last night I prayed,” Beckinsale wrote on Instagram. “I knew it would be bad — we had to evacuate many times during our life there — but the shock at the whole of the Palisades being destroyed is unthinkably horrific. My daughter and I lived there for most of her childhood and most of her childhood is gone. Her primary school, every shop or restaurant we used to go to with my parents and Michael [Sheen]’s parents — and devastatingly, most of her friends’ homes. My heart is broken.”
