When it comes to Liam Neeson, the word ‘taken’ hits differently than it does for the rest of us.
After starring in three high-grossing action films of the same name, Neeson has revealed that he recently “fell in love” with a woman who was “taken” in a different nature—that is, she’s currently in a relationship.
The Taken star headed to Melbourne in 2020 and spent several months filming his latest action flick, Blacklight. However, while he was there, the Love Actually star explained that he not only fell in love with our country, but also one of our citizens. Apparently taking place when Melbourne was enduring a stage four COVID-19 lockdown, it was then that his heart found another.
In an interview on Sunrise, Neeson hinted at his love quest with the show’s entertainment editor Nelson Aspen, leaving the rest to viewers’ imaginations.
“I loved Melbourne. I loved our Australian crew, they are fantastic workers,” he said.
“Every department was superb. They were their own people, do you know what I mean? They had a great sense of humour,” he added, smiling.
“I made a couple of pals… I fell in love, but she was taken.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, both morning talk show hosts implored to know more, admittedly saying that they’re “intrigued” by his confession. Host David “Kochy” Koch then asked those watching at home to “give us some hints”, if any of them knew “the lady involved” over on their Facebook page. So far, the mystery woman is yet to be found.
While falling in love should always be something to celebrate, in this case, it’s especially so. Neeson has steered clear from the dating scene since the death of his wife, actress Natasha Richardson in 2009. Passing away at the age of 45, she suffered an epidural hematoma, two days after she hit her head during a skiing lesson in Quebec, Canada.
In 2014, Neeson opened up about his late wife’s unexpected death to Anderson Cooper, explaining that doctors informed him that the accident left her clinically brain dead.
“She was on life support… I went in to her and I told her I loved her. I said, ‘Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this, you’ve banged your head,’” he explained.
“She and I had made a pact, if any of us got into a vegetative state that we’d pull the plug. That was my immediate thought, ‘Okay, these tubes have to go. She’s gone.’”
The couple were married in 1994 and share two sons together, Micheál and Daniel. Since her death, Neeson has only notable dated British publicist, Freya St Johnston, however, the pair called it quits after two years together.
