A day after Justin Timberlake was arrested in Sag Harbor, New York, his lawyer has spoken out.

In the early hours of June 18, the pop star was pulled over by police, who said he ran a stop sign and swerved out of his lane. The officer determined he was intoxicated, with court documents noting, “His eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot and he performed poorly on all standardised field sobriety tests.”

Timberlake was arrested and taken to a nearby police station, where he refused a breathalyser test, according to court papers. Before being taken into custody, he posed for a mug shot. The 10-time Grammy winner was charged with one count of driving-while-intoxicated misdemeanour and his next court date is set for July 26. He was reportedly also charged with two other traffic violations: one for running a stop sign and one for failure to keep in lane of travel.

On June 19, Timberlake’s attorney, Edward Burke Jr. spoke out. In a statement obtained by People, Burke said he “looks forward to vigorously defending Mr. Timberlake against these allegations.”

It added, “[Burke] will have a lot to say at the appropriate time. He is currently awaiting full discovery from the DA’s office.”

Per multiple outlets, upon being stopped, Timberlake told police he had drank one martini and was following some friends home.

Page Six reports that the officer who pulled the 43-year-old over “was so young that he didn’t even know” who he was.

“He didn’t recognise him or his name,” a source told the outlet.

A second insider added, “Justin said under his breath, ‘This is going to ruin the tour.’ The cop replied, ‘What tour?’ Justin said, ‘The world tour.’”

Timberlake has two upcoming shows in Chicago this weekend, and is set to perform at New York’s famous Madison Square Garden on June 25 and 26.
