Australian singer, actor and all-round legend, Jessica Mauboy has confirmed the birth of her first baby with husband, Themeli Magripilis.
Announcing the news in a recent interview with Stellar, Mauboy revealed that her daughter – named Mia – was born on January 13, but the couple chose to keep the news private up until now.
Speaking about the decision, Mauboy explained that her new role as a mother has brought with it a new set of challenges – figuring out how to navigate parenting in the public realm has been just one of them.
“The scary stuff that comes with being in the spotlight, I had to understand that was going to come,” she said of wanting to protect herself from any potential negative comments that might ensue.
Putting the initial trepidation behind her, Mauboy spoke at length about the emotional journey she’s experienced during her early days of motherhood.
“It has been a bit of a rollercoaster but a magical one,” Mauboy shared with Stellar, also revealing that of course, “I’m making up lots of lullabies for her.”
“I look at her and it’s ‘whoa!’ because I see myself, that little frown,” she continued.
“I’m not sure I want her to have my personality, because it’s rough and it’s tough … She’s constantly changing every day, another little roll, another crease.”
Jessica Mauboy and her long-time love, husband Themeli Magripilis, married in July 2022, after 16-years together.
The couple celebrated their nuptials in the Northern Territory in an intimate ceremony followed by a family-filled affair at Mindil Beach Casino Resort.
Sharing details about the reception with The Australian Women’s Weekly in February 2024, she said: “It was really, really special to be able to do that and to have everybody that we loved there, particularly in the Top End. The majority of our friends from friendships that we’ve formed on the other side of the world were able to make it. And this was a time where the borders had just lifted [after COVID restrictions] and our families from community were able to come out and be a part of it.”
At the time, the star had been candid about her family’s gentle-yet-persistent enquiries about when they could be expecting a grandchild, and Mauboy’s response was – as ever – a relatable one.
“But now they’re like: ‘Where are the babies’? I want to, I always tell them. Yes, I’d love to, but now isn’t the time … I do long for that one day … I just haven’t come to making that happen yet.”
In light of the baby news, we can only assume the couple’s extended family are already showering their new addition with the same love and support their relationship has received thus far.
