Jennifer Lopez may have dominated the music industry and perfected her acting prowess onscreen. But now, she’s taking her talents behind-the-scenes, thanks to Netflix.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Lopez has signed up for a multi-year deal with the streaming giant, in order to create a plethora of fresh film and television content, that are both female-driven and created.
Made with the 51-year-old musician’s production company, Nuyorican Productions, Lopez and her producing partners, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina, will work to support all-women actors, filmmakers and screenwriters.
“I am excited to announce my new partnership with Netflix,” Lopez said in a statement after the news was announced.
“Elaine, Benny and I believe there is no better home for us than a forward leaning content creation company that seeks to defy conventional wisdom and directly market to the millions across the globe who no longer view art and entertainment with the kind of boundaries and limitations of the past.”
She also added that the entirety of her team is looking “forward to getting to work right away”, not only on their new projects, but upcoming ones too, including two films, The Mother and The Cipher, that Lopez is set to star in.
At the moment, Lopez is preparing for her leading role in The Mother. The brainchild of Niki Caro, the face behind Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan, the film will see Lopez play an experienced assassin who is forced to come out of hiding and risk her life, in order to train her daughter how to kill in order to survive.
As for her role in The Cipher, the film is based on Isabella Maldonado’s novel of the same name, that will see Lopez take on her Shades Of Blue roots to to play Nina Guerrero, an FBI agent who is tangled in a serial killer’s web, attempting to catch them while being forced through a series of cryptic online clues and puzzles.
“Jennifer is a singular talent whose creativity and vision have captivated audiences and inspired the next generation around the world,” Bela Bajaria, Netflix Head of Global TV, revealed in a press statement.
“For years she and the team at Nuyorican have brought a distinctive voice to entertainment, and I’m looking forward to working with her and the team to create new series for our members to love.”
