This week Adele revealed that she officially married two of her best mates – English comedian Alan Carr and his long-term partner Paul Drayton – at her home in Los Angeles.
It sounded like some sort of set-up – surely she didn’t really marry them. Surely she just sang a few songs or walked someone down the aisle, right?
Nope. She actually pronounced them to be officially, in the eyes of the law, husband and husband. Turns out Adele got herself secretly ordained as a minister so she could legally marry her friends. She said, “I want to do your special day. Let me do everything.” Alan Carr told ITV’s ‘This Morning.’ “And she did everything, and she got ordained and she married us.” The ceremony even took place in the backyard of the Rolling In the Deep singer’s Los Angeles home.
Adele isn’t the only celebrity who’s officially allowed to marry couples. The website getordained.org and universallifechurchministers.org allows almost anyone to become a
minister with just a few clicks of the mouse. And celebs seem to take great pleasure in being able to do the deed (as well as being able to officially refer to themselves as “Reverend”).
Robbie Williams became a minister to he could marry his friend Billy Morrison, the bass player from the British rock band The Cult, to his American girlfriend in 2002.
Actor Jonah Hill married Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinsloo and Maroon 5 signer Adam
Levine in 2014.
Tom Hanks was the minister who presided over Allison Williams’ wedding – that’s Marnie from Girls – in 2015.
British actor Benedict Cumberbatch turned man-of- the-cloth for the wedding of TV personality and criminal attorney Judge Robert Rinder when he married his partner in Ibiza in 2013.
And best of all, if you head to the website of universallifechurchministers.org you can pick your own celebrity minister for your own wedding.
Nicole Richie, Goldie Hawn, Sharon Stone, Lady Gaga, Stephen Colbert, Fran Drescher are all legally allowed to stand up and marry you and your beloved, if you can convince them to do so.
The idea of having a celebrity helping you tie the knot isn’t even that far-fetched – comedians Kathy Griffin and the late Joan Rivers have both married fans who asked them.
One thing’s certain – having a famous face standing next to you at the altar is a surefire way to make your wedding snaps stand out on Instagram.
