After The Bachelor‘s Matt Agnew and Chelsie McLeod announced their split on Instagram on Sunday, everyone was expecting the show’s runner-up, Abbie Chatfield, to respond (despite it being six months since filming ended and with it, her relationship with Matt).
But after numerous comments on Abbie’s most recent photo accusing her of ‘baiting’ the former Bachelor and mentioning the breakup news as if it is now ‘her chance’, Abbie eventually took to her Instagram stories to clear things up.
“Hello everyone, I’ve been tagged in a lot of comments this morning on posts about Matt and Chelsie’s relationship ending,” she wrote. “Some of you are saying it’s ‘my shot,’ others are saying that he’s done a Blake Garvey. None of this is fair on Chelsie, Matt or me.”
“My contact with Matt ended when I walked away from him at the finale, and I am good friends with Chelsie and love her very much,” she continued. “These comments are unnecessary and aren’t helping anyone. I have nothing to do with their relationship or their breakup, so I’d appreciate it if I was left out of the conversation. Matt and Chels are great humans and I want them both to be happy.”
Earlier in the day, Abbie responded to fans’ comments on her below post which were accusing her of trying to get Matt’s attention. When one person commented “Matt Agnew and Chelsie Mcleod just broke up its your chance Abbie”, the runner-up responded with a simple “no thanks!”
She went on to write below another comment, “I’m not allowed to use my Instagram because a couple that I have NOTHING to do with break up?” and “Dont wanna reel anyone in.”
Earlier in the day, Chelsie and Matt released separate statements confirming their split. “Matt showed me what it was like to be respected in a relationship and I am so thankful for that. However, it saddens me to say that we are no longer together. I wish him nothing but the best. I’m sorry to those that were invested in our relationship,” Chelsie wrote alongside a montage of photos of the former couple. She later took to Instagram stories to ask fans to please refrain from sending her articles about the split, saying “it won’t help.”
On his post, Matt wrote, “These past six months since filming has been a very unique experience. Chels and I have made some beautiful memories together that I’ll always cherish, and I wish her nothing but the absolute best.
However, it’s with a heavy heart that I write this. For Chels and me, our relationship hasn’t translated from filming to the real, everyday world as we had hoped. Chels is a very special woman and I want her to find the happiness she deserves. For those who may wonder if there’s someone else for me right now, there absolutely is not.”
He finished, “It’s no one’s fault, it’s just life.”
