What is it about Asher Keddie that has made her a mainstay on Australian television screens for decades?

Time and time again the much-loved actor manages to capture the mood of the nation with performances that stand the test of time. And in 2024, like clockwork, she delivered. Again.

July saw her star as Birdie in the TV adaptation of journalist Stephanie Wood’s memoir, Fake, in which she brilliantly captured the pain and nuances of being in a relationship
with a conman. The role was integral in raising awareness that romance scams aren’t always financially motivated and can happen to anyone.

In October, her latest series, Plum, launched on the ABC, with Keddie playing Renee Lum, the ex-wife of an Aussie football legend (played by Brendan Cowell) who has retired and is
dealing with the aftermath of concussion.

It’s another important project, given new data on long-term effects of concussions on the brain.

Last year, Keddie appeared in the acclaimed seven-part series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart alongside Hollywood heavyweight Sigourney Weaver and iconic Australian actor and playwright Leah Purcell. The sweeping saga won an AACTA Award for best miniseries.

Keddie’s output has been extraordinary. She has added an impressive 11 credits to her name since her popular role as Nina Proudman in the beloved Offspring series wrapped in 2017.

Speaking to marie claire last year about women and the acting industry Keddie said, “I feel we’ve progressed, that we’re more aligned and more supportive now.”
