The name Michelle Carter will always been associated with the “Texting Suicide Case,” that much is certain. Now, the infamous moniker is related to another phrase: “The Girl From Plainville.”
Indeed, the trial that gripped the world has now been made into a television series, currently airing on Stan. Featuring Elle Fanning as Carter, The Girl From Plainville is the next true crime adaptation which unpacks how she was charged and convicted of involuntary manslaughter following the death of her boyfriend, Conrad Henri Roy III.
Roy died by suicide on July 13, 2014, but Carter’s involvement was investigated in the ensuring trial. Eventually, the judge found that Roy’s “chain of self-causation” in his suicide attempt was broken when he left his truck. Carter then encouraged him to return to the vehicle, which was where he later died.
Carter was just 17 years old when she was first indicted for the crime in 2015. In June 2017, she was convicted and in August that year, she was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison and five years of probation.
As the eight-part series drops week by week, we can’t help but wonder how Carter’s life turned out, and where she is in 2022.
Below, find out where she is now.
Where is Michelle Carter now?
At present, Carter is on parole, presumable still within the United States.
She spent two years appealing the case after she was convicted in 2017, but in February 2019, she finally began serving her sentence in Bristol County. By that stage, it had been reduced to 15 months. While she was incarcerated, her behaviour was commended by officers who called her “a model inmate”.
Due to her good behaviour, Carter was released from prison three months early in January 2020. Her probation is set to end in August 2022.
Where The Girl From Plainville is concerned, the now 24-year-old is not allowed to profit from media projects that surround her case due to her parole conditions. But while she’s unable to make any money from this series, there’s nothing to say she won’t share her story in other ways for profit when her probation ends.
How did Elle Fanning prepare to play Michelle Carter?
Before filming began, Fanning admitted she knew little about Carter other than recognising her “eyebrows, her scowl”,
“That’s all I knew,” she previously explained.
In an interview with Collider, Fanning said she and the creators didn’t want to “sensationalise” the story in the small-screen adaptation, adding that she hoped to “show more to all of these characters, to both families, to just not do what the media did, which was kind of blanket it in one way and not show the facts or the details behind it all.”
As for the physical transformation, a forehead prosthetic and three different wigs (used to depict Carter as she grew older) were applied on Fanning preceding each scene.
Hairdresser Jules Holdren also told Harper’s BAZAAR that Fanning played a part in the transformation.
“Elle had great ideas when it came to the looks we created,” she explained.
The hairstylist added: “My most favorite was the shoulder-length bob. Her look for the infamous prom photos were a lot of fun to re-create.”
