After an 18-month COVID hiatus, the celebrities, influencers, designers and models have ascended those iconic steps and given us all something to talk about. This year, the theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, and whether or not the attendees understood the brief is for you to decide…

Here, marie claire editors dish on their favourite looks of the night.

Nicky Briger – Editor

Kaia Gerber in Oscar de la Renta

“When it comes to event dressing by American designers, Oscar de la Renta has a prized place in everyone’s hearts. Kaia Gerber’s black de la Renta gown with exquisite bodice detailing was understated but oh-so elegant. I also love his respectful nod to the past: the look was inspired by Bianca Jagger’s Halston look from the 1981 Met Gala. Because Kaia’s just turned 18, she’s finally allowed to attend the Met Gala. Nice first outing!”

Bee Carrozzini in Valentino

“Bee was just crowned world’s most glamorous mum-to-be in this whimsical teal Valentino gown. Mum Anna Wintour would be proud.”

Emily Ratajkowski in Vera Wang

“Emily Ratajkowski’s ruby-red Vera Wang lace gown was an absolute show-stopper. American design is very much about red carpet dressing, and this creation from Vera’s bridal collection is classic celebrity awards-worthy attire.”

Naomi Smith – Fashion Director

Rihanna in Balenciaga couture

“This is the hottest collection right now, absolutely everyone was talking about Demna’s couture debut, so it’s only fitting that Rihanna is wearing it to the Met. Also perhaps interesting to note that while Rihanna is in couture, another high-profile celebrity who has been wearing a lot of Balenciaga lately was only in their ready-to-wear collection at the Met…just saying…”

Margaret Qualley in Chanel

“Absolutely divine. She looked so stunning at the Chanel autumn/winter couture show in July, and is stunning here, too. Rarely puts a foot wrong.”

Teanne Vickers – Junior Fashion Editor

Zoe Kravitz in Saint Laurent

“This look is another statement on how post pandemic dressing is far from conservative. History has previously proven that after times of depression clothing seeks to become more conservative and palatable. But this pandemic has proven quite the opposite and I love it.”

Troye Sivan in Cartier

“While his look was minimal, Troye’s ability to effortlessly push gender norms is inspiring. He looks better than I ever would in a dress the subtle detailing of leather and cut out’s was right on the money.”

“No words, just nailed it.”

Emily Gittany – Fashion and Production Assistant

Zoey Deutch in Versace

“This colour is heaven! Loving the matching shoes to the dress and the way the dress sits on Zoey. The detailing in the dress is fabulous and loving the detached sleeves – so in!”

Rachel Smith in Rodarte

“Look at those sleeves! Rachel glows in this tiered Rodarte gown and I’m loving the fluffy bag, elegant jewels and matching nail polish to the sparkles on the dress. Stunning!”

Kaia Gerber in Oscar de la Renta

“A sucker for classic chic, I love the detailing on the bodice, the gorgeous hair and the simple elegance that oozes from this look. *chefs kiss*.”
