If you’ve engaged in any form of fashion discourse over the last few years, you’ll know of the conversation surrounding Margot Robbie’s red carpet reign.
The promotion of her latest film, Babylon, which is extravagant love letter to the origins of of Hollywood, is no expectation.
However, for the home-grown stars appearance in Sydney for the Australian premiere, Robbie deviated from her tried-and-tested bold ensembles and opted for something more demure.
We’ve seen her sartorially referencing the bold and excessive costuming of her character Nellie LaRoy, a unabashed and utterly unhinged aspiring actress, before, but here it seems Robbie is channelling the sentiment of the times.
Both on the streets and on international runways, 90s minimalism is being championed as the aesthetic du jour, and it was this effortlessly sophisticated silhouette that Robbie opted for the occasion.
This, of course, wasn’t without a classic Kate Young twist. Indeed, it was tonal dressing done two ways that really cemented Margot’s presence as a bona fide style savant, and made us all crave a never ending Sydney summer.
Commotion broke out earlier in the day when Bryce Scarlett, Margot’s go-to hairdresser posted a photo of the A-lister wearing a slate coloured set from lauded local designer, Christopher Esber.
Robbie is once again proving that the celebrity style set are in their Esber era, and for our sake we hope it’s a period we never grow out of.
Choosing a design from the cult-favourite labels’ Resort 2023 collection, (look 26, if you want to talk numbers), Robbie paired a floor-length charcoal skirt with the supermodel-approved cowl strapless top.
The combination of the bustier silhouette with the expertly-draped maxi skirt was a masterclass in refined simplicity. Completing the look with her signature beachy waves, soft glam and a stack of bracelets, Robbie is proving while an Esber uniform is one worthwhile investing in.
However, the reception Robbie’s ensemble received online was nothing compared to the hoard of screaming fans awaiting the star at the Sydney premiere.
Descending on the State Theatre to promote the production, Robbie chose a similar hued ice-cold Versace dress that we couldn’t help but embody Sydney’s summer. The satin column dress featured a heart neckline, a draped sarong detailing and red lace applique.
Speaking to marie claire Australia on the red carpet, Robbie revealed that the choice to stay within the same colour family for her run in Sydney was all part of hr strategy to a have theme for each press tour.
“With this one [Babylon] we’ve really been enjoying the really bold, saturated colours,” she revealed.
“You never feel like yourself on the red carpet and no one dresses like this everyday…so it’s an elevated version of yourself, it’s like playing dress up.”
We can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve for Barbie…
