If you’re going to watch one thing on Netflix this month, make it Maid.
The gripping based-on-a-true story drama follows a mother, Alex, who flees an abusive relationship with her young daughter, Maddy. As she tries to pick up the pieces of a stable life for herself and her daughter, she becomes a maid.
Barely scraping by, she encounters some major obstacles—and even more heartbreaking is just how realistic they are for any single-mother who has escaped a life of abuse. In the series, Alex’s mother Paula comes into her story, but her mental illness makes their relationship difficult to navigate.
The 10-episode series touches on some difficult themes, so the producers sought the very best talent to bring it to life. Emmy Award nominee Margaret Qualley and Hollywood stalwart Andie MacDowell are mother and daughter on-screen and off-screen in this special family debut.
To compliment them, an array of stunning faces join the cast. Here, we look at the key people behind the characters—and where you’ve seen each of them before.
Margaret Qualley plays Alex Russell
Margaret steals the screen with an incredible portrayal of Alex, an abused single-mother trying to make a life for herself and her daughter. The 26-year-old actress has steadily been solidifying herself as one to watch with a slew of major productions now under her belt. She previously starred in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood alongside big wigs Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as joining Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys.
Andie MacDowell plays Paula Langley
Many of us are already familiar with Andi MacDowell’s work—though perhaps her best is yet to come after starring alongside her daughter, Margaret Qualley in Maid. Playing the turbulent role of Paula, Alex’s mum, Andie perfectly captures the complicatedness of the role.
Of course Andie, now 63-years-old, is best known for Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral. But she never stopped at those 90s classics—one of her more recent projects was Ready Or Not, starring Australia’s Samara Weaving and The O.C.‘s Adam Brody.
Nick Robinson plays Sean Boyd
26-year-old Robinson plays the father of Alex’s baby daughter in Maid, but this likely isn’t the first time you’ve seen his face—the Washington native also starred in 2018 hit, Love Simon in the lead role. He was also in 2015’s Jurassic World.
Anika Noni Rose plays Regina
This stunning 49-year-old was a Disney Princess in a past life, voicing the production giant’s first African American heroine Tiana in The Princess and the Frog. She also starred in 2006 film, Dreamgirls and is no stranger to the stage, having been part of the Broadway production, Caroline, or Change.
Billy Burke Plays Hank Russell
Billy Burke is perhaps best known for his role in the teen sensation, Twilight, where he played Charlie Swan. He’s also starred in NBC television series Revolution, and he’s tapped into the horror genre with a role in Lights Out.
Rylea Nevaeh Whittet plays Maddy Boyd
In her first ever role, the now 5-year-old Rylea will leave you breathless as she depicts Alex and Sean’s daughter in Maid. If there’s one thing we know about her following this performance, it’s that she’ll be one to watch.
Tracy Vilar plays Yolanda
Tracy is best known for her television roles in Partners, a CBS sitcom, as well as The Steve Harvey Show which aired on The WB.
