A month after being hospitalised with a bacterial infection, Madonna is reflecting on the experience, saying she’s “realised how lucky I am to be alive”.
In an Instagram post featuring two of her children, Madonna wrote that her children “really showed up” for her.
“Love from family and friends is the best Medicine. One month out of the hospital and I can reflect,” she began.
“As a Mother you can really get caught up In the needs Of your children and the seemingly endless giving……….. But when the chips were down my children really showed up for me. I saw a side to them I had never seen before. It made all the difference.”
In the photos, Madonna showed a gift of a framed Polaroid taken by Andy Warhol, featuring Keith Haring wearing a jacket with Michael Jackson’s face painted on it.
“I sobbed when I opened this gift because I realised how lucky I am to be alive. And how fortunate I am to have known these people and so many others who are also gone,” she said.
The heartfelt caption accompanied photos of her son, David, 17, and daughter, Lourdes, 26.
Madonna has six children in total, including Rocco (22), Mercy (17) and twins, Stella and Estere (10).
In June 2023, Madonna was rushed to hospital after being found unresponsive at her home.
The ‘Material Girl’ singer, who celebrates her 65th birthday in August, was treated in a New York City hospital for a “serious bacterial infection.”
Page Six reports the singer was intubated for at least one night in the intensive care unit.
Following the incident, Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary shared details around Madonna’s hospitalisation on Instagram, when he wrote that she “developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several day stay in the ICU”.
He also shared that “she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected”.
According to Oseary, all of Madonna’s current commitments have been put on pause. This includes her upcoming world tour.
“We will share more details with you as soon as we have them,” he concluded.
The singer was due to kick off her world tour in Vancouver on July 15.
On July 11, Madonna took to Instagram with an update:
“Thank you for your positive energy, prayers and worsd of healing and encouragement. I have felt your love,” she wrote to her fans.
“I’m on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life.
“My first though when I woke up in the hospital was my children. My second though was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour.
“I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to creaqte my show. I hate to disappoint anyone. My focus now is my health and getting stronger and I assure you, I’ll be back with as soon as I can!”
She confirmed plans to reschedule her North American tour, and instead kick off with her European shows in October.
“I couldn’t be more grateful for your care and support,” she signed off. “Love, M.”
