“How do we re-contextualise fashion in this moment?” asks Jonathan Anderson, seated casually on a stool against a chalky black wall. “It’s sometimes better to embrace a moment that’s challenging, rather than trying to pretend that it’s not.”
For Loewe’s spring/summer 2021 video presentation, the creative director got up close and personal with his audience, talking them through key pieces in the collection, which are showcased on spinning mannequins behind.
Sculptural volume defines the offering, from huge padded skirts and ballooning sleeves to amped-up ruffles and puffy tulle. Boning and corsetry only play up the giant proportions. But there’s a focus on the little things too, with most pieces hand-embroidered, hand-woven or handmade by a team of artisans at the Spanish luxury house.
“Sometimes it’s nice to escape into clothing,” affirms the designer, looping back to his opening words. And for that, we’ll take a billowing candy pink two-piece splashed with orange gerberas. Loud, proud and perfect for social distancing.
