We’ve all been there, seduced by the sweet sweet scent of that ridiculously expensive candle in the shop.
You justify it to yourself by saying it will help you de-stress, add a little romance in the bedroom and cover up that pesky, ahem, aroma that your dog left on the carpet… Plus the label says it will last up to 80 hours – so it’s basically an investment.
Then you go to blow out your new candle only to find the centre has completely dipped in around the wick, and the rest remains solid.
Yep this even has a name, it’s called candle tunneling a.k.a expensive candle = ruined.
Well apparently it’s because we’ve been burning candles wrong our whole lives. But thankfully there’s an easy fix.
When you burn your candle for the first time, you need to allow a couple of hours of burn time. You need to make sure the entire top layer melts into an even pool of wax before blowing it out.
When you burn a candle, the shape the wax sets in once cooled, is the way it will continue to burn.
If you do this, it should burn evenly from then on.
Easy.
