Where The Crawdads Sing is one of the most highly-anticipated movie events of the year, with the 2018 novel topping the New York Times bestsellers list, and the movie expected to draw in similar accolades.
Hollywood icon Reese Witherspoon served as producer on the project, having read and fallen in love with the book before acquiring the movie rights under her company, Hello Sunshine.
Daisy Edgar-Jones has assumed a leading role, alongside her two onscreen male counterparts, played by Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson.
On July 11, the star-studded cast descended on the Museum of Modern Art in New York to celebrate the film’s official premiere.
Witherspoon immediately turned heads, appearing in a neon pink, mid-length dress and giving off major Elle Woods vibes. The Emilia Wickstead dress was left to stand on its own, with the actress opting for understated gold sling back heels from Aquazzura and dainty gold jewellery to compliment the bright aesthetic. Her hair and makeup was equally as lowkey, with soft curls framing her face and a swish of pink lipstick to tie everything together.
Leading lady Edgar-Jones looked elegant as always, appearing in a cascading floral dress from Gucci’s Resort 2023 collection, Cosmogonies. The chosen colour-scheme and design are likely a nod to the marshland which features so prominently in the movie, with the actresses character paying tribute to nature in more ways than one.
Finishing the look with pale pink, strappy heels from Gucci, she opted to pin her brunette tresses back into a loose bun, letting her curtain bangs frame her face (which has undoubtedly become her signature defining feature).
Smith and Dickinson opted for a similar look, with grey suiting reigning supreme. Smith kept his look more casual with a white t-shirt underneath his suit jacket, while Dickinson went for a white collared shirt and tie. Both men finished their looks with a pair of black shoes.
If you’re not familiar with the plot, the movie is set to tell the story of Kya, a young woman in North Carolina who was abandoned by her family and is forced to raise herself during the early fifties. She mostly lives a quiet life and keeps to herself, but when her former boyfriend is discovered dead, she quickly finds herself accused of his murder.
The film’s end credits will feature a new, original song from Taylor Swift, titled “Carolina,” which she wrote specifically for final acknowledgements. The news has sparked buzz about the singer earning her first Oscar nomination for Best Original Song — just one of the many possible awards which could come from the film.
