People With Mental Illness Are Sharing The Things You Should Never Say About Their Condition

"But you have nothing to be upset about, your life is amazing"

When supporting someone who is struggling with their mental health finding the right words can be difficult, and despite the best of intentions, some comments can do more harm than good.

Thatโ€™s why Hattie Gladwell, a lifestyle reporter for MetroUK, started the hashtag #ThingsNotToSayToPeopleWithMentalIllness, calling for those with a mental illness to tweet their suggestions in a bid to educate those who donโ€™t understand.

โ€œQuote this tweet with one thing you wish people wouldnโ€™t say to those who have mental illness,โ€ she wrote. โ€œIโ€™ll start: โ€˜Other people have it worseโ€™. Please donโ€™t invalidate my illness just because you donโ€™t understand it.โ€

Hattie points out a sensible rule of thumb โ€“ if you wouldnโ€™t say it to someone experiencing physical ill health, donโ€™t say it to someone experiencing mental ill health. And often, itโ€™s the most simple statements will suffice.

Are you ok?

How are you?
