That pattern is about to change with the release of HBO Max’s latest docudrama, There Is No “I” In Threesome, which explores one newly engaged couple’s real-life experiences with polyamory before saying “I do.”

Using iPhones, Jan Oliver Lucks, who stars as the film’s title character Ollie, and fiancé Zoe Marshall (Natalie Medlock), the pair record their six-month exploration into the complexities of having an open relationship—including, engaging in their first threesome.

As co-writer and director, Lucks told the Hollywood Reporter that “Making this film over the last five years has been one wild, slippery, ride (I will never look at hot-water bottles the same way). I am thrilled that we can now finally share the journey, offering a voyeuristic look at the fun to be had when opening up a relationship. Bring your mum, but don’t tell mine!”

What Is There Is No “I” In Threesome About

The film, directed by Jan Oliver Lucks, follows freshly engaged New Zealand couple Ollie and Zoe who decide to open up their relationship and explore if monogamy is truly for everyone. And when relationship lines begin to blur, the pair are forced to face the implications of their decision.

The film starts with Ollie and Zoe, deciding to open up their relationship until their wedding date so they can explore their sexuality. They also are a long-distance couple, so the open relationship gave them the opportunity to be with someone else while away from each other. The couple decided to film their experience and turn it into a documentary.

Ollie and Zoe end up becoming a polyamorous couple and they get a new girlfriend and new boyfriend, respectively.
