‘The Crown’ Releases Behind-The-Scenes Featurette Of Emma Corrin’s Fitting For Diana’s Wedding Dress

The dress took 14 weeks to create

While we’ve been transfixed by the performances of Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor in The Crown‘s latest season, we would have to argue that their incredible costume department also deserves our praise and attention.

After creating dozens of spot-on replicas of real-life fashion moments, costume designer Amy Roberts—who won an Emmy Award for her work on season three—has outdone herself this season, from Diana’s pre-wedding overalls to the wedding dress that the world is still talking about.

In a new behind-the-scenes featurette from Netflix, fans are shown everything that went into creating the jaw-dropping costumes from season four. From the making of the dress—which took 14 weeks to create by the same lace company who worked on the original—to one of Corrin’s five fittings for the costume.

“What do I remember? What do you think about? The sleeves, the bigness of that, and that huge, long, great train. That’s what I have to achieve,” Roberts said.

Jokingly, Corrin adds: “I remember the first one, I was like, ‘Should my mum be here?’ I was like, ‘This is such a… it is a wedding dress fitting. It might be the only one I do in my life.’”

The featurette also depicts how Roberts created Margaret Thatcher’s “extraordinary, hugely feminine” style as she “was obsessed with clothes”, as well as the difficulties that went into Roberts and director Jessica Hobbs’ journey for Princess Margaret, played by Helena Bonham Carter, in episode seven.

“We just talked about this late-life bruising, what was happening to her,” Hobbs says. “It’s just so beautiful when you go through the episode and realise what Amy’s done… Suddenly all these colours appear, which are very like a bruise deepening over time.”

Speaking on her personal experience from her countless years in the industry, Bonham Carter said: “I’ve never spent more time on a job in costume. It was very much a collaboration. Although, Amy, a lot of the time, would say, ‘Just shut up and get on with it, you look marvellous.’”
