While we wish we could play along in the lives of Scarlet Magazine’s loveable trio, Kat, Jane and Sutton, forever, in news not even the dot-com could have predicted, Stan has announced the fashion cupboard doors will officially shutter for The Bold Type‘s fifth and final season.
The show’s final run finds the trio of friends “on the brink of defining who they really are and how best to leave their mark on the world,” per the official synopsis. “Their futures are bright, and their love and support for each other will never change.”
“The Bold Type has been an incredible gift that has truly changed my life. I spent my twenties in New York City, working in magazines, so in many ways, the show feels very personal to my experiences,” said showrunner and executive producer Wendy Straker Hauser. “I have truly loved writing this show and living in this world. I will miss it terribly, but I am so grateful for the opportunity and glad to know it’s been a comfort to so many people out there.”
Now, finally, we know when the Scarlet trio will be returning to our screens for the final time, with Stan announcing the fifth and final series will air on May 27, 2021.
Watch: ‘The Bold Type’ Season 5 Official Trailer
As of May 7, 2021, we’ve just been given our first bittersweet look at *The Bold Type* season five, courtesy of its first official trailer.
As suspected, the relationship and career drama that Kat, Sutton and Jane have endured over the last four seasons is far from over.
Sutton is emotionally preparing to move on from her ex, Richard, only to have him return. Sam Page’s character looks like he’s going to throw Sutton’s plans off balance, with the trailer hinting at a potential tryst between the former married couple.
Meanwhile, Kat and Jane are also navigating murky relationship waters. Kat’s ex-girlfriend Adena has come back into her orbit and Jane is desperately trying to ignore her feelings for her employee, Scott.
What happened in The Bold Type season four?
The magazine-drama last left us with the three BFF’s at their limits, both personally and professionally.
Sutton’s (Meghann Fahy) marriage is falling apart and now she’s slept with her married high school boyfriend. Jane (Katie Stevens) was testing the line of a relationship with one of her employees while pursuing a story that Jacqueline (Melora Hardin) pushed back against. Kat’s (Aisha Dee) controversial ending saw the social media manager fired for exposing the company president’s support of gay conversion therapy, and beginning a relationship with his conservative daughter Eva (Alex Payton-Beesley).
Just days before that finale aired, Dee took to Instagram to call out the show for its lack of support for BIPOC cast and storylines, specifically the one that left Kat dating a white, conservative woman.
“The decision to have Kat enter into a relationship with a privileged conservative woman felt confusing and out of character,” she wrote at the time. “Despite my personal feelings about the choice, I tried my best to tell the story with honesty, even though the Kat I know and love would never make these choices. It was heartbreaking to watch Kat’s story turn into a redemption story for someone else, someone who is complicit in the oppression of so many. Someone whose politics are actively harmful to her communities.”
The network responded to Dee’s criticisms. “We applaud Aisha for raising her hand and starting conversations around these important issues,” the statement read. “We look forward to continuing that dialogue and enacting positive change. Our goal on The Bold Type is and has always been to tell entertaining, authentic stories that are representative of the world that Kat, Jane and Sutton live in—we can only do that if we listen.”
Fans of the series will be happy to know that Kat’s ex-girlfriend Adena (Nikohl Boosheri) will be returning for season five.
The Bold Type’s final season will air on Stan on May 27, 2021.
