Sydney is now the proud home to a $57 million Church of Scientology headquarters, complete with living quarters for Scientologist celebs like Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
When the property opens in September, it will be the largest Scientology church in Australia, and it aims to attract members of the controversial religion from all over the world.
Located in Chatswood, worshippers will only be transported in private buses to get to the property, and there will be restrictions on which people can enter ‘The Bridge to Total Freedom’ and ‘auditing’ sessions in the building.
The president of The Church of Scientology, Vicki Dunstan elaborated on the need for a church outside Sydney’s CBD. She told The Daily Telegraph:
“The Church is developing a plan that allows for administrative functions, ancillary uses and theological studies for parishioners and staff. The site provides more advanced religious studies and services for existing members of the Church.”
Members of the church will aim to increase recruitment by targeting people suffering from depression or drug addiction in the area.
Chatswood residents have opposed the construction of the church, but Vicki Dunstan assures them that there should not be a problem.
“During the construction phase the church has worked with the neighbours on relevant matters and looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively as our facility moves into the operational phase.”
