It’s been over a year since the ’80s-centric third season dropped, so it’s only natural to feel a Stranger Things-shaped hole in your heart.
And while we patiently await the supposed final season’s arrival, it looks like season four won’t be the final chapter for the Hawkins kids.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, creators Ross and Matt Duffer spoke about the Emmy-nominated season three and the future of the show, as well as rumours that it may end with season four.
“Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is,” Ross revealed.
“[The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story.”
Despite production on the show put on hold for the safety of their cast and crew, the Duffer brothers have spent the time working on scripts and figuring out how they’ll keep the momentum going.
“We’ve had a lot more time to work on the scripts. For the first time, we have all the scripts written and we’re able to look at it as a whole piece and make adjustments,” admitted Matt.
This is quite a change from what the co-creator told Vulture back in 2017, when Ross referred to Stranger Things ending with the fourth season. “We’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out,” he said at the time.
In July 2019, Stranger Things stars Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp told THR that they weren’t sure how the Netflix smash series would end. “We don’t want to overdo it,” McLaughlin said.
“It’s the Duffers. I’ll be like, ‘Four [seasons]?’ And they’ll say, ‘I don’t know.’ And I’ll say, ‘Five?’ And they’ll say, ‘I don’t know.’ It’s whatever they want to do. I’m open to doing more,” added Wolfhard. “You don’t want to milk it,” said Schnapp.
“They want to keep it good and not start milking the success.”
