Recently, I visited a health retreat and found myself eating plant-based for most of the week. I’d never really bothered to work on my diet when it comes to eliminating meat, but I had been thinking about it. Then, when I did reduce my meat quotient, I found myself pleasantly surprised as I felt less sluggish, less bloated and more clear-headed.
Still, as a Greek, I don’t think I can fully give up meat. But as we learn more about the environmental impact of the industry, plus the physical impact I’ve noticed on myself, the pressure to reduce my meat-intake has reached fever-pitch.
When I was approached about Soulara, a plant-based meal delivery service crafted by chefs and nutritionists, I was intrigued. Delivery meals have, in the past, not really been up my alley. I’ve often found they are a bit tasteless or salty.
I decided to try a week’s worth of meals, predominantly lunch and dinner styles as my breakfast is, forevermore, “porridge with some honey zapped in the microwave”.
When the Soulara meals arrived, they looked delicious – even in the packaging. The sauces and bases were separated in the container, something I really liked as when put together after heating, the rice or pasta wasn’t soggy.
I have not had one bad meal yet. And I’ve tried a lot – some stand-out favourites have been Lentil Bliss Bolognese (actually tastes like regular bolognese except slightly more lentilly) Vegetable Sunset Curry (delicious curry!) and White Bean Vitality Stew (tastes like health and radiance).
There are options that use plant-based protein that mimics meat, like Thea’s Deconstructed Moussaka, and others that just use vegetables.
Oh, and if you’re a sweet tooth, the Bliss Balls are all-time.
I’m finding Soulara is an easy way to reduce my meat intake, but it’s also just damn convenient. The meals are fresh and easy to heat, so I have no problem having them for every lunch, which has been my method so far. Even during work from home, it’s so nice to just have a meal on hand without having to rip heaps of stuff out of the fridge.
If you’re interested, Soulara has heaps more information on site (including all the other delicious meals, with pictures). The 7 meal a week plan (my current one) will cost you $80.50 a week.
