What do the following celebrity mothers all have in common; Kim Kardashian, Kate Middleton and Laura Byrne?
Answer: They have all come under fire for their parenting skills. This phenomenon is commonly known as mum-shaming. For the unversed, mum-shaming is Criticizing or degrading a mother for her parenting choices because they differ from the choices the shamer would make.
It’s a familiar story and one that The Bachelor’s Matty J and Laura Byrne have found themselves at the centre of after posting their most recent photo with their daughter Marlie-Mae Rose. Sharing this family photo at a Sydney restaurant, fans were quick to notice the “smoking area” sign behind the tired parents and expressed their concern.
“I hope no one was smoking while you had your baby out there… cute photo,” quipped one follower.
Laura shortly clarified that they didn’t see the sign.
“Ahhhh s***, I didn’t even notice. We just went onto the balcony for a photo… Cue the mummy mafia!!!” Laura responded.
“Everyone in front of us was dining. I didn’t even realise that behind us was the smoking area. Looks like just the one guy, we good,” she added.
The Bachelor couple announced the arrival of their first child earlier this month with Toni May jewellery designer Laura writing: “Welcome to the world you divine little slice of human pudding,” Laura wrote. “Marlie-Mae Rose Johnson (named after our Nana’s) you’re more than we could have ever hoped for ❤️19.6.19.”
Proud dad and former Bachie Matty also celebrated the birth of their baby girl with a heartfelt post. “Still letting the last 24hrs sink in,” he began. “They’ve been the most rewarding, loving and emotional I’ve ever experienced. @ladyandacat you did the most incredible job bringing our little girl Marlie-Mae Rose Johnson into the world. Becoming a Dad was better than I ever could have imagined.”
The happy news comes after the couple suffered a miscarriage last year when Byrne was seven weeks pregnant. She fell pregnant again, just a few weeks later taking them both by surprise. “We’d heard so many stories about how it had been so difficult for some people and obviously we thought it was going to be difficult for me because of what had already happened,” Laura told The Daily Telegraph.
“When you’ve had a miscarriage, you worry if there is something wrong with you,” she admits. “It is not something that people really talk about but actually one in four pregnancies end that way, you just don’t hear about it.”
