SBS’s bold new psychological thriller, Safe Harbour, premieres on Wednesday night and features an incredible cast, a taut mystery—and not a commitment ceremony in sight.

The four-part series follows a group of friends holidaying on a yacht en route to Indonesia when they cross paths with a fishing boat filled with hungry and desperate asylum seekers.

The friends agree to help the passengers on the broken down boat by towing them to Australia. But by the next morning, the rope between the two vessels has been cut and the fishing boat is gone. Who exactly cut the rope remains a mystery.

Flash forward five years and the friends are still dealing with the aftermath of their fateful sailing holiday. Relationships have crumbled and old secrets are revealed.

The series is jam-packed with Australian stars including Jacqueline McKenzie, Phoebe Tonkin, Ewen Leslie, Leeanna Walsman, Nicole Chamoun, Hazem Shammas and Robert Rabiah, and is filmed on location in Brisbane.

“Safe Harbour is one of SBS’s proudest achievements – it’s not only a gripping thriller that will keep audiences guessing, but an exploration of the ethical decisions people make under pressure,” SBS Director of Television and Online Content, Marshall Heal said in a statement.

“It combines high concept drama with relatable characters that put a human lens on an issue usually only discussed in news and current affairs programs and political debate.”
