Six Non-Negotiable Rules For Visiting A Newborn

A guide to visiting a new baby

There’s nothing quite like a newborn baby. The smell, those itty-bitty hands and feet, the cuddles.

But whether it’s a family member or friend who has just welcomed their bundle of joy into the world, there are certain rules that you should always follow when visiting.

1. Let the new mum know that you are ready to visit when they are ready for visitors. Don’t be pushy or take offence if they say no. When they are ready, suggest a few times and let them choose what works best for them and their bub.

2. Be on time. Mums are exhausted and on a tight schedule, so be punctual. People showing up during feeding time is especially stressful when new mums are still trying to figure out what they’re doing.

3. Don’t assume they don’t want visitors. Some mums miss interacting with the outside world. Keep the communication lines open and leave the ball in their court.

4. Don’t outstay your welcome. Each mum will vary, but if you haven’t been given a time limit – half an hour is probably the maximum amount of time you should stay. Remember, you might not be the only person visiting throughout the day.

5. Don’t turn up sick – not even a slight case of the sniffles (and make sure you’ve had your Whooping Cough vaccination).

6. Bring food. Pre-made meals, snacks – anything!
